Adult Swim drops an official trailer for its upcoming series Smiling Friends, based on the 2020 pilot of the same name.

Adult Swim has released an official trailer for Smiling Friends, a new series set to debut on Cartoon Network’s late-night programming block in January.

The Smiling Friends series is based upon the pilot of the same name created by Zach Hadel (aka psychicpebbles) and Michael Cusack, which originally aired on Adult Swim over a year and a half ago. The new trailer features footage from the pilot, though also offers a peek at some upcoming episodes of the series. “They’re guaranteed to cheer you up,” the narrator proclaims. “Unless, you know, they can’t for some reason.”

The original Smiling Friends pilot, titled “Desmond’s Big Day Out,” first aired on Adult Swim on April 1, 2020 as part of the programming block’s annual April Fools Day event. The pilot follows Pim (Cusack) and Charlie (Hadel), two employees at Smiling Friends Inc., a company dedicated to making people happy.

Pim and Charlie are tasked with cheering up a suicidal man named Desmond (Mike Stoklasa). The quest takes them all over the city, from Pim’s family home, to a random house party, to an amusement park called Daveland. Meanwhile, fellow Smiling Friends employee Alan (Cusack) takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of the office’s bliblie infestation after his previous cheese goes missing from the breakroom. In the process, he discovers a strange man (Finn Wolfhard) is living in the walls.

“Desmond’s Big Day Out” was well-received by audiences, accumulating over 1.3 million views across various social media platforms and becoming the most-watched program on Adult Swim’s website. However, for the longest time, it was unclear if Adult Swim would be ordering Smiling Friends to series. Finally, on May 19, 2021 — over one year after the pilot initially aired — it was officially announced that Smiling Friends was, in fact, coming back for more episodes.

The show’s first season is slated to run for a total of eight episodes, including the pilot. Smiling Friends Season 1 was initially targeting a late-2021 premiere, though is now set to arrive in early 2022. A sneak peek showing Pim and Charlie on a new mission pitting them against a witch was revealed during the 2021 Adult Swim Festival last month.

Smiling Friends premieres Jan. 9, 2022 at midnight on Adult Swim.
