Artist Sándor Szalay, aka The Sonnyfive, introduces The Stranger Squad in a new piece of colorful crossover fan art

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Netflix’s Stranger Things both feature colorful casts of characters and an artist merged the two to create The Stranger Squad.

The artist Sándor Szalay, who goes by The Sonnyfive on Twitter and Instagram, took one of the movie posters for The Suicide Squad and swapped out the DCEU villains with characters from Stranger Things. In the new poster, Eleven takes the place of Rick Flag, Mike replaces Peacemaker, Will takes the place of Harley Quinn, Dustin and Lucas replace Ratcatcher 2 and Polka-Dot Man, respectively, and Hopper stands tall in the place of Bloodsport.

The Suicide Squad premiered in theaters on Aug. 5, breaking several records upon its release. The film surpassed both Wonder Woman 1984 and Zack Snyder’s Justice League in terms of views during its first three weekends on HBO Max, becoming the most-watched DCEU film on the platform. It also set a record for the highest-earning R-rated movie of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Stranger Things debuted on Netflix in July 2016 and the fourth season is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2022. The show became a pop-cultural juggernaut, with Seasons 2 and 3 amassing over one billion total hours watched on the streaming platform. On top of that, the series was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards and ten Primetime Emmy Awards.

The fourth season of Stranger Things and Szalay’s artwork aren’t the only things that have fans of the sci-fi horror series excited; for example, Magic: The Gathering is releasing a limited-edition card set inspired by the series. Netflix is also launching two Stranger Things mobile games worldwide titled Stranger Things 3 and Stranger Things: 1984. On top of that, the Darkness on the Edge of Town novel by Adam Christopher provides fans with previously unknown details about Hopper’s past.

Moreover, the artwork isn’t the only recent example of fan art that combines two unrelated franchises. For example, comic book artist InHyuk Lee fused Marvel’s Spider-Man and Netflix’s Squid Game to create a bloody, triumphant masterpiece. Another artist named Buster Moody merged the aesthetics of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghost in the Shell to produce a robotic, anthropomorphized turtle, while artist Malin Falch posted two images that thrust Link from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda into the forlorn, hollow world of FromSoftware’s Dark Souls.

The Suicide Squad is now available for purchase on Blu-ray, while the first three seasons of Stranger Things are available to stream on Netflix.
