Eternals’ Richard Madden Discusses the MCU’s First Ever Sex Scene

Richard Madden, who plays Ikaris in Eternals, discusses the significance and importance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first true sex scene.

WARNING: The following article contains minor spoilers for Eternals, in theaters Nov. 5.

Eternals star Richard Madden believes that the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s first true sex scene is an important watershed moment for the franchise.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Madden said, “I think there was something nice about having an intimate scene where you see these characters who do make love… showing an intimacy in their relationship over the years. Much like the diversity in the film, I feel like that intimate moment is also something that should be normalized.” The scene in question occurs between Madden’s Ikaris and Sersi, played by Gemma Chan.

“I think it gives an insight into a very intimate moment in the lives of people who are actually very private and untouchable beings. To see them be intimate together is a special, delicate thing,” continued Madden. While the scene in question is no doubt a watershed moment for the MCU as a whole, director Chloé Zhao recently spoke about the considerations that went into creating it.

“From that moment to what you see on-screen there was definitely a lot of discussion about how to do it,” she said. “But I think the desire to do something different is a very natural desire for where Marvel Studios is right now. I think it’s like Westerns coming into the revisionist period of the ’70s. I think it’s happening to superhero films — or at least we’re on the edge of that. And so these scenes just started to happen naturally.”

Given Eternals’ PG-13 rating, it’s unlikely that the sex scene in question will be prolonged or overly explicit. Yet beyond the occasional hint, this marks the first time the MCU will include a scene depicting any kind of physical sexual relationship. “For us to be able to show two people who love each other, not just emotionally and intellectually but also physically, and to have a sex scene that will be seen by a lot of people that shows their love and compassion and gentleness — I think it’s a really beautiful thing,” concluded Zhao.

Marvel Studios’ Eternals opens in theatres on Nov. 5. Starring Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Kumail Nanjiani, the film tells the story of a race of immortal beings tasked with protecting the world from a group of evil creatures known as Deviants.
