The series Naruto has some of the greatest, most iconic heroes in all of anime. The title’s namesake is no exception to that. Starting from the humblest of beginnings, Naruto crawled his way up to the top. He learned so much in his early years, gaining the respect and admiration of his entire village along the way.
Soon enough, Naruto became one of the strongest Shinobi around, easily earning his title as Hokage. But despite being a beloved hero, Naruto isn’t always a symbol of pride for Konoha. Despite his growth throughout the series, there have been several moments where he was annoying, immature, and just plain rude.
10 He Vandalizes The Hokage Rock In The First Episode
The audience’s first introduction to Naruto in Episode 1 portrays him as an obnoxious, troublemaking kid. He is caught in the act of vandalizing the faces of the four Hokage featured on the mountain. Though he is in serious trouble, he appears unconcerned by it and boasts about how he will be greater than them all.
This prank may be nothing more than a rebellious kid acting out for attention, but it doesn’t make it any less disrespectful. It puts Naruto in a negative light from the start, building him up to viewers as an annoying brat.
9 His Confidence & Hot-tempered Nature Put Others In Danger
As a kid, Naruto is one to act first and think later. He always runs headfirst into things without coming up with a plan or thinking it through. Sometimes this works in his favor. Most of the time, however, it hinders the mission and anyone else involved.
Due to his cocky attitude, he puts friends and those he protects in danger. His big ego makes him seem careless. Though it may be untrue, he comes off as unconcerned for those around him.
8 He Is Forceful With His Beliefs
One of Naruto’s biggest strengths is his unyielding faith. He has a very strong set of beliefs that he goes by in life. While this is an admirable trait of his, he can sometimes push it too far with others. He feels so strongly about some things that he tries to force others into what he feels is right.
A prime example is in his reaction to Sasuke. Despite the serious crimes he has committed, Naruto is ready to forgive and spare him. He wants everyone to treat the situation similarly and believes they will, even though Sasuke has endangered his life and the lives of countless others.
7 He Disguises Himself As Sasuke To Trick Sakura Into Kissing Him
In their genin days, Naruto’s crush on Sakura tends to cloud his judgment on several occasions. One time, in particular, he decides it is a good idea to jump Sasuke and disguise himself in hopes of stealing a kiss from Sakura.
Not only is this a horrible idea, but it is also very problematic to try to trick Sakura in this way. Naruto’s crush on Sakura can be pretty creepy in general when they’re kids. It leaves little room to wonder why Sakura is so annoyed by him at first.
6 He Is Constantly Bragging About Himself
Throughout the series, Naruto displays a very cocky show-off attitude towards those around him. Though his bragging may be a habit he develops due to being ostracized by the village, that doesn’t make it any less annoying when he does it. He seems to think his boasts make him look cool.
In reality, all it does is make him seem loud and obnoxious. Although it can be funny at times, this aspect of Naruto makes him hard to root for early on in the series.
5 His Job Makes Him An Absent Father
There is no denying that Naruto’s job as Hokage is extremely important. As the leader of the Leaf, he has to make time to protect the village. However, it leads him to struggle with juggling between his work life and home life. While this is a difficult task for anyone, it doesn’t excuse Naruto from his absence in his children’s lives.
One of the biggest examples of his negligence is when he misses Himawari’s birthday, sending a shadow clone in his place. Missing the party is one thing. Sending the shadow clone instead is where he messes up. It implies that he cares more about work than his family, even if that couldn’t be further from the truth.
4 He Taunts Everyone At The Start Of The Chunin Exams
When the Chunin Exam begins, Team 7 joins in and meets the other genin for the first time. Naruto takes that opportunity to make an enemy out of everyone there. He announces to them that he will be greater than all of them, a common theme for Naruto in his early years.
His fellow genin don’t take his outburst very seriously. Nevertheless, this outburst of his is still rude and annoying. It is another example of Naruto’s obnoxious behavior as a kid that makes him hard to like at the start.
3 He Insults The Uchiha Clan When Sasuke Loses To Rock Lee
During the Chunin Exams, Team 7 meets Rock Lee, who suddenly challenges Sasuke. Sasuke underestimates Lee and swiftly loses before he can even get a hit in. After his defeat, Naruto talks down to Sasuke. He mocks him for his loss, despite also being handed a quick defeat by Lee.
He takes this too far when he begins to insult the Uchiha Clan itself, saying they must not be worth much if Sasuke lost. Though this is just another moment of rivalry between Sasuke and Naruto, it is still cruel. It may be unintentional but his comments to Sasuke are very hurtful and insensitive.
2 He Is Insensitive At The Memorial Stone
Kakashi takes his team to the Memorial Stone, showing them the names of the heroes recorded on the slab. Before he can continue, Naruto interrupts him, saying he wants his name on the stone too. He immediately retracts this statement after Kakashi tells him they are the names of those who died in service of the village.
Naruto doesn’t understand the importance of the stone or the symbol of respect for the dead it is meant to be. He is still young and has yet to learn these lessons. Still, his outburst is insensitive and careless, showing he would rather make everything about himself than listen with respect.
1 He Punishes Boruto In Front Of Everyone
During the Chunin Exams in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Naruto catches Boruto cheating with the Scientific Ninja Tool. He cuts in right away, exposing his son in front of the entire stadium. Boruto deserves to be caught and punished for cheating. However, Naruto handles the situation entirely wrong. He should pull him aside and punish him privately. Instead, he chooses to humiliate him in front of everyone.
Boruto tells him that he cracked from the pressure and his feeling of inadequacy. He believes he would be a better ninja if Naruto was there to teach him. This moment is one of Naruto’s worst as a father and drives home why Boruto is always so hostile towards him.
