Thor’s Weirdest Relationship Isn’t With a Person – It’s With His [SPOILER]

While Thor has a pretty unique perspective on the Marvel Universe and its heroes and villains, his most unusual dynamic of them all is closer to home.

As an Avenger and a superhero that straddles the line between fantasy and science fiction, perhaps more than most in the Marvel Universe, Thor has built up quite the prominent position and maintained numerous relationships with the universe’s multitude of heroes, villains and everything in between. This has only grown increasingly complicated after Thor has succeeded his father Odin to take the throne and become the new King of Asgard, with the God of Thunder’s most unusual and complex dynamic of them all feeling the strain the most of all: Thor’s relationship with his trusty war hammer Mjolnir.

Forged by the dwarven blacksmiths of Nidavellir in the heart of a dying star from the mythical metal uru, Mjolnir was enchanted by Odin so that only those the hammer found worthy would be able to lift it and wield its full power. Eventually proving himself to his father and the hammer, Thor and Mjolnir became virtually inseparable, with Thor using the hammer to channel his powers as the God of Thunder through it. More notably, Thor could use the hammer to fly, open inter-dimensional portals and change into his human guise as Donald Blake and blend in with humanity. And over the years, Mjolnir itself would gain sentience and become more than a mere weapon for the Asgardians.

Thor Swinging Mjolnir

Mjolnir’s sentience came from a cosmic storm that Odin grappled with to empower one of his enchantments upon the hammer and it has become decidedly fickle as of late. When Jane Foster claimed Mjolnir to become the new Thor after the Odinson lost his sense of worthiness during the crossover event Original Sin, the hammer grew to like Jane so much that it openly defied Odin when the All-Father attempted to command it back under his authority. This iteration of Mjolnir would sacrifice itself to destroy the monstrous Mangog but a shard remained to serve as the heart for a new Mjolnir that a restored Odinson would use for his latest hammer.

Lately, Mjolnir and Thor appear to be on the outs, ever since Thor was crowned King of Asgard, with his focus diverted to the kingdom’s numerous priorities. The hammer has grown increasingly heavier for Thor to pick up while those that wouldn’t normally be deemed to hoist it up, such as Loki and Iron Man, have been able to easily wield it for themselves. Thor reasons this may be due to the various enchantments Odin placed upon it growing unstable as a result of Odin relinquishing his powers as the All-Father to his son. More troubling, Thor sees his trusty hammer in the hands of one of his greatest enemies, with Mjolnir wielded by Thanos in a repeated vision of the universe’s end.

While Thor and Mjolnir have a historically tight relationship, working closely together to defend the Marvel Universe from some truly epic threats for millennia, the hammer has been known to have a mind of its own — literally. For as complicated as Thor relationships can be with his family, his friends and his fellow Avengers, the most unpredictable dynamic the newly crowned King of Asgard has in his life is with his own signature weapon. And with the fate of the entire Marvel Universe facing the very real possibility of dominion by the Mad Titan, Thor is going to make things right with Mjolnir soon or all of reality will be destroyed at Thanos’ hands.
