WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If…? Season 1, Episode 8, “What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?”, streaming now on Disney+.
Marvel released a new poster for its What If…? series on Disney+, this time uniting all the heroes who participated in the show’s climactic final battle.
Marvel Entertainment shared the poster on Twitter, which featured a combination of Captain Carter, Star-Lord T’Challa, Black Widow, Killmonger, Strange-Supreme, Gamora and Party Thor in their previous What If…? promotional poses. Heading the poster is the Watcher’s quote, “You are the Guardians of the Multiverse,” a title he bestowed onto the group before sending them off to fight an Infinity Stone-powered Ultron.
What If…?‘s finale saw the Watcher, having failed to defeat Ultron after he learned about the multiverse, team up with Strange-Supreme to pull characters from past episodes with the skills to take down this threat. The primary exceptions were the Black Widow of Ultron’s world, who was found by the Guardians during their battle, and Gamora, whose episode with Iron Man was cut due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and pushed back to Season 2.
“In Season 2, it’ll almost be like a little bit of a prequel, we’ll see how Tony and Gamora became friends because those two don’t even interact in the main MCU universe,” said head writer A.C. Bradley in a previous interview. “Given all the upheaval that we’ve been through in the past two years, pushing an episode is nothing, and we completely understand. Our animation houses have been absolute rock stars in pulling off this show.”
In the finale of the show’s first season, titled “What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?,” their initial plan to destroy the Infinity Stones failed. However, Peggy (Hayley Atwell) and Natasha (Lake Bell) managed to infect Ultron with an Arnim Zola-infused arrow, allowing Zola (Toby Jones) to take over his body but also giving Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) a chance to claim the Stones for himself. This, however, provided Strange with a window of opportunity to trap them and the Stones in stasis, thus containing the multiversal threat.
Beyond the Gamora and Tony Stark-centric episode, it’s unknown how the Guardians of the Multiverse’s actions will tie into What If…?‘s second season. Marvel confirmed that Captain Carter’s story will be revisited every season, as teased by a mid-credit scene of Peggy and Nat discovering the remains of Steve Rogers’ Hydra Stomper armor. However, the majority of episodes will be inspired by Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 characters and narratives. Additionally, a spinoff series about T’Challa’s alternate self and his Ravager allies was considered during Season 1’s production but, due to Chadwick Boseman’s death, is currently in “limbo.”
Season 1 of What If…? is currently available to watch on Disney+.
