What If…? head writer A.C. Bradley promises that the post-credits scene from the season finale will pay off in the Disney+ series’ second season.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If…? Season 1, Episode 9, “What If…The Watcher Broke His Oath?,” which released Wednesday on Disney+.

What If…? head writer A.C. Bradley promised that the post-credits scene of the Disney+ series’ season finale,”What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?,” which implied the return of Captain Carter’s version of Steve Rogers, will pay off in the series’ upcoming second season.

During an interview with Comicbook.com, Bradley and series director Bryan Andrews discussed what the scene entailed for viewers. “Well, we have to wait and see,” Andrews began. “But then again, I think it’s pretty safe to say that — I mean, Ashley said it. You put it perfectly, so I don’t want to steal your line. You should say it.” Bradley added, “Well, I was just saying that our twist endings are fun, but a post credit scene is a promise to the audience,” Bradley said. “And Peggy and Steve, come on, they’re the OTP.”

In the post-credits scene of “What If…The Watcher Broke His Oath?,” upon returning to her Earth after saving the multiverse, Captain Carter learned that the ship she was on prior to being summoned by the Watcher had the HYDRA Stomper on it. The HYDRA Stomper, of course, was the mech suit Captain Carter’s aforementioned version of Steve Rogers used in lieu of the super solider serum in this universe.

In addition, Bradley recently revealed that Season 2 is “going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase Four than we were obviously able to this season.” “Hopefully, we’ll see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters.” she added. “The fun of What If…? is that we get to explore the entire infinite multiverse, so we try to bounce around as much as we can. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we’ve got to share the love. I’m very excited to show new worlds, new heroes.” Bradley further stated that the season will “focus a lot more on the character stories and these heroes and showing a different side of them that people don’t expect and hopefully they can relate to.”

As for Captain Carter herself, the character will not only be a recurring one in the series, but it is also rumored that she will appear in the forthcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Season 1 of What If…? is now streaming on Disney+.
